Today I fixed the issue that I caused yesterday. I rotated the different end half on the splints almost 90°, no wonder there was some vibration.
I stripped down the hand brake assembly and just made everything run again. Took the prop spins apart and greased it all, put it all back together. refitted it all. Great. Then while I had the help of a friend, I did the valve clearances. While all of that was going on I had to remove the cover over the fuel tank, and found this growing: I scrapped all of the mud and plant off. Wax-oiled the chassis in that area and generally made it inhospitable to plant life. We took the land rover for a quick spin and noticed a vibration, couldn’t think what we might have done to cause this. Tonight it came to me that I had not paid any attention to what orientation I put the uj’s on the prop back together.. So that’s tomorrow’s job.
I found that my handbrake wasn’t much good on Tuesday, so I took a look and think I might have found the cause. I think I’ll put it down to mud ingress. Now begins the clean up.
Today I put a nearly invisible patch on the rear wing where it had gotten folded over and torn the return bit, thus making it rather flappy and non rigid. Might get the paint out at some point.
I beat my wing out of shame on something, not sure what, but it certainly altered the shape somewhat. I spent a few minutes with a blow torch and a hammer and altered it again today.
I went to the TV4x4 event at Oxley’s Shaw today. Had a great time, got rather muddy and got stuck twice.
I purchased a temperature sensor that connects to the Arduino quite some time ago. I finally got it working by finding the library and the discovery that it’s actually a digital output. I purchased a DS18B20, which is a three wire digital type job. The wires are 5v, 0v and the signal wire. It seems to work, I also have a switch to over ride turning the fan on. I felt this was prudent in case I had set the ‘on’ temperature too high.
Driving home from the event last weekend I had water running down the inside of the windscreen. I deduced that it was coming in around the glass, and from this deduction I realised that the Dumdum sealer that I had used to fit the glass some ten years ago was starting to fail. Not wanting to remove the whole windscreen I dug out the crusty sealer from the outside edge of the windscreen. I found that I still had a tin of ten year old Dumdum in the shed that was in perfect condition inside the tin, so I now have (hopefully) a leak free windscreen.
I went to a Thames Valley 4×4 event on Sunday last, I had great fun, totally failed to get any photos there. I did reverse into a tree which smashed the plastic light lens on the drivers side tail light and bent the metal cage over it. So now it has a new Riv-nut fixing at the bottom of the cage, but it still has the old rusty steel screws holding the body of the light into the land rover, these were very hard to remove even with copious amounts of WD40. I need to find some stainless self tappers of that size. I did happen to have another light lens in the store.
