Air “filter” is pergaps strong, the filtering element is only really pre-cleaner rated foam, so it’ll stop stones and small animals etc getting sucked in, but it’s not going to stop the fine dust from going through the engine. I bought the foam on ebay. Now last time around when I made the mesh “filter”, I struggled to make a perfect cone which sat nicely into the housing. So I was thinking hard about how I could do it differently this time. When I got stuck in the mud some time ago (https://bhhh.co.uk/stuck-briefly/) I managed to use to the Hi-Lift jack to removed one of the hooks that holds the rear hood flap down. It pinged off and went in the mud and I wasn’t able to find it. I set about making a new one from some thin stainless steel I had lying around.
I found that my fast method of spray painting my wheels had missed some bits, so blew then over and also removed the head light surrounds for the military look. Then wire brushed the mud off and painted those bits too. I also had some hinge rebuild kits so made up two series 2 door hinges up. I might at some point make some front doors which can be pined back against the wing.
I did it very quickly without any prep, so we’ll see how well it takes. It was a can of rubberised enamel paint, which sounds great. When I got stuck the other week, the stoney ground simply stripped the mat black paint right off, probably down to my lack of surface prepartion, well, I’m set for failure again perhaps. We’ll see. The paint dried mat, not gloss as it is when wet.
The handbrake had progressively gotten to the point where it wasn’t holding at all. This had become irritating so i set about fixing it. Turns out that the pads are right down on their limit. They’ll need replacing at some point. Whilst in there doing it i replaced the four prop shaft bolts on the transfer case output as they were close to stripped.
I recently found that i had a blowing exhaust. So I have now replaced the leaking mid section with a stainless one (likely 304 grade). I also made a nice new hanger bracket from a bit of thin 316 stainless.
It’s been reasonably spectacular weather of recent in this part of the world. First we had some cold, which just gave us some pretty views, a fog filled valley and a little ice. Then it rained a bit and some rivers flooded. Hannah kindly video’d me going through a flood at Chilfrome, then I tried to video myself cycling throught the same flood the day after.
I though I would check my spark plus to see if one of the cylinders was drinking oil. I planned on doing this because on start up the Land Rover produces a puff of smoke. I am not sure that it used to do this before the engine rebuild. I was worried that maybe oil was getting into a cylinder via the head gasket. If I were to have found that one of them was black and oily then the head would have been coming off again. As it was they all looked similar: That’s 1, 2, then 3 and 4 are below in order left to right, top to bottom. the phone camera was busy trying to set the colour profile best for the picture.. honestly I couldn’t tell them apart. I took a friend and his young son out in the Land Rover, just intending on giving the youngster a taste of driving green lanes as he was super keen. So we did the first bit from Chilfrome along the unclassified road, made a right turn and forded the Irish bridge at Sandhills. We turned back so as to continue along the track where we’d turned off. I knew there had been a soft patch there, but someone had tipped a load of building waste there and i imagined it was hard.. Using the high lift jack we got the Land Rover up and out of the hole and that seemed to do the trick. It popped out after that. P. S. The disc brakes are working perfectly. Very nice.
Got the wheels and outter bearing on. Now I need to buy some more brake fluid and finish bleeding the brakes. The whole process of swapping out the brakes will have taken a few hours, maybe up to 5 hours in total.
