I was asked to carry out a repair to this gate hook. It had worn down fairly substantially in the past decades. Having taken advice from a professional I chose to weld a new bit of steel to the existing pin there by restoring it to closer to what it used to be. I picked up some three quarter inch diameter round bar stock (mild steel). Having and cut a length of it equivalent to the length of the existing pin and I then away from this bit of bar so that they two fitted together to form a round pin. Then it was just a case of welding it into one lump. As it was, This picture was in this blog entry: https://bhhh.co.uk/circles/ Here you can see the very clean (wire brushed using the angle grinder) existing hinge pin and the slightly rust coloured bit of mild steel sitting […]
I thought I would just have a test of my welding skills, to see if I think I am of a reasonable skill level to take on the repair to the church gate. I have been asked to repair a gate hanger at the church. I have taken advice from a building conservation specialist who suggested it was best to make the repair as permanent as possible and also in keeping with the original design. So I shall be welding in some new metal to beef up the worn out pin. This is rather than drilling and tapping out the pin and using a bolted connection. The result of the welded option should be better in his opinion. Of cause if the weld doesn’t take well then I can always revert to drilling and tapping. These two welds were at very different amps, the lower left one was at about […]
When I last welded the gear stick back together after breaking it a year or more ago I did an okay job. I had been thinking that it could do with improving a little as it was narrow and far from an even diameter where the weld was, weld was burned in a bit deep. So this time I returned to it and added some decent beads of weld over it ground it back. This picture was taken after I had removed my welding mask from my head and returned to the work and realised how cool it looked glowing red hot, so by this time it had cooled a lot. I did give a quick coat of clear lacquer, but I did this too soon while the metal was still hot and I think that made the lacquer go milky. At least it’ll stop it from rusting.
