Dad gave me a 2kW electric corded chainsaw that he’s purchased for a job that he never did and has since moved house so likely will have no use for this thing. I assembled it last night, filled it with oil and took a small cut in some polystyrene, then stuck it on a shelf, handy for next time I have to hack some wood up close to a power socket.
We had a great little USB charger that I picked up in the airport one time and put on expenses. It packed up a couple of years ago and I had planned on pillaging the USB ports from it for some other use. But getting into it proved too hard and I wound up using a 2lb ball pane hammer to bust it open and found that it had suffered a heat failure: It was also totally impossible to recover the USB ports as they’re too well incorporated into the board, so I binned the lot. Shame.
I had to get two new tyres for the Citroen while we were over Portsmouth way, so managed to find a garage just on Hayling Island that would do it on a Saturday afternoon at short notice. So while they were doing it, I took a walk. This signal is almost all that is left from the days when there was a rail link to the island.
I had been collecting this baby bell wax for some time. I saw a youtuber who’d had a load of wax, melted it and poured it into tin along with some cardboard and was using it as a giant candle. I’ve no idea if this will actually get used, or was probably more fun making it than using it. I lit and left it for a few minutes to see if the card just burned away or whether the wax was being burned. I think the wax was burning, so it’s on a shelf now.
We went to visit friends who live very close to London, so much so that they tell people they live in London, when in fact they live just the other side of the line. We took the opportunity to go into London and visit the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. It was really cool to go again and to get to see the diplodocus skeleton.
I have set about beginning to gradually build Abigail a dolls house. I’m taking an iterative approach to it, I set about just creating a couple of floors and two walls, no windows or doors, to see how she likes it. I felt that she’d just want to play with it, regardless of whether I think it’s finished or not. So I did some building, then let her have it, and then next evening took it away and did some more building.
It appears to me that as time passes by that the previous time period of the same length appears to have been greater than the current or most recent time period. This experience becomes normalised as you experience more and more years until they appear to be mostly the same length, but passing quickly because they’re just a small small fraction of your overall life span so far. The above graph shows the rate of change when you’re very young is very high this tails off as you pass about 10 years old where there would appear to be a 1:1 ratio of years of age to life span. The percentage quickly reaches low numbers of 5% at age 20 and so the next 80 years as spend gradually reducing that number to 1% at age 100. The above graph is the same data, but presented on a base 2 […]
I decided to upgrade my old 4D Maglite to be an LED lamp rather than the old halogen lamp that was in there since I got way back. The littlun is pinching parts as I try to photograph them, sorry. That or the Maglite I have is huge if you take that hand to be mine. I got the this from:http://thetorchsite.co.uk/HIGH_power_Multimode_10_watt_Maglite_LED.html Ordered it on Sunday night and it was here on Tuesday morning. I get the low setting at the 20 second mark, takes me four tries to get it.
I purchased some drill bits from Ebay, very cheap ones, but it said that they were cobalt so I thought I’d give them a try for 2 and a bit quid. In fairness the drills did have HSS stamped on them, but I suspect that stands for “Highly Soft Steel” in this instance, they’re almost certainly made from Chinesium. In future I’ll pay reasonable money to a reputable shop for decent drill bits. Lesson learned.
We visited Yorkshire and York last weekend. We visited the national train museum. I was amazed by the cut open steam locomotive, I took the photo looking towards the front of the loco to the right of the photo with the fire box in the foreground to the left. The river is the Ouse and the house is Beningbrough Hall.
