I picked up a second hand sickle at the Steam and Vintage show, I wanted one as I keep going on local walks and finding that I am cutting back foliage with my pocket knife, which is tiny and not really up to the job. It would be far faster with a sickle. I need to make a sheath for it though, as I am certain that it’s an offensive weapon and so should probably be holstered to avoid trouble. I have been wanting to buy one for ages, but a very cheap new one on Ebay is about 7 quid including postage etc, but that seems cheap and has a plastic handle but then a second hand one seems to be up nearer £20 or more with postage as they’re collectors items or something. So I saw this one with a price tag of £20, and got it for […]
I spent a few hours clearing the undergrowth and the rubbish /cuttings and soil from the drainage ditch that runs along the back edge of the garage building last weekend. I did not get a before photo, but it was very full of stuff. I now need to do some digging at the far end to remove a lot of stone and soil from the ditch.
The Land Rover steering wheel is finally getting a cover. I stripped the leather from the garage sofa the other day, washed it using a weak bleach mixture to get rid of the mold. Last night I set about cutting and stitching some bits… I now need to stitch it onto the wheel. It fits fairly tight around the circumference of the wheel. I have yet to find out if this is tight enough. I suspect it is not right enough, this based on what I’ve seen on YouTube. But since I’ll have to cut new leather, I’m not going to worry until I find out why it should be almost impossible to get onto the wheel…
I managed to get a Golder sign from the old Bourne End office before they tossed them all in the skip.
The bike had a birthday, I bought and fitted new tyres, inner tubes, chain and cassette last night. The brutal method of chain removal that I took, given I couldn’t find, or perhaps don’t have a chain tool. I then remembered that I actually know how to change tyres, inflate the tube a little first, put it into the tyre before putting tyre and tube onto the rim. I surprise myself sometimes. I did however fail to spot that the tyres are directional, it was only having fitted the rear tyre that I noticed this. As usual luck was on my side and it was the right way first time, win. This is the rear wheel taken as per the photo below.
I think that pretty much tells the story. I bought this bike about 4 or 5 years ago for £75, thinking I would ride to work. I never did, but I did ride about Bracknell a little, I enjoyed it, but now I am riding it a few days a week and feel that it’s time to replace the tyres, chain, cassette and probably put two new tubes in it also. Wild times, I know. Obviously I’ll likely fit the very cheapest of cheap components so as not to totally write the bike off. This shows how much the chain has stretched:
Since fitting the second reversing light I have not walked behind the Land Rover and seen what they look like. I have been using them as I have been reversing around in the drive way a fair bit recently. Since there is no street lighting around these parts, having reversing lights that actually illuminate the world behind is a bonus.
I went into the garage the other day, flicked the lights on as it was dark out, seconds later there was an electrical crack and the darkness was back. So I ignored the situation by carrying on with the battery power work lights. I gave the issue some thought and decided that since I thought the noise had come from one of the lights at the far end that I would start by unscrewing the individual covers and see what they were looking like inside. I was imagining that I’d find a stray wire, or a spider or something else creating a short circuit. I took two covers off before I found one that had water in it. I cleaned it up and sprayed it with WD40 as that I felt would help with any water ingress. I put it all back together and tried the lights again but with […]
Some ttime ago I bought two cheap drill bits online.. https://bhhh.co.uk/got-what-i-paid-for/. Then I spent good money in Screwfix and got a decent one. Now I have done it again.. This is a genuine question at the time of writing, I have not yet used it. I like the look of the tip. I hope that the part which is a slightly different colour is something super hard…
