Having got the sand I took the opportunity this weekend to pull up and re-lay all of the slabs so that they’re better laid and also more equally spaced, and more level and equally level to one another etc. Basically I did a bad job first time around. Bottom right photo is before showing the gap, also the level was not very good with the concrete. It’s better now. I’ll let the slabs bed in for a few weeks then probably try to level them better and then I’ll go around and grout them in.
We’ve done a little re-arranging and planted a few bits in the garden this weekend. Bought a couple of shrubs, no idea what they are, they apparently looked pretty. Had a go at tile grouting the joints in that small patio area, this I am certain I did wrong and mostly made a mess. I shall make myself a icing piping bag arrangemnt with some grout and do it better another time. The rough area is flourishing nicely. Bottom right is my blackcurrent who’s nearly buried in wild strewberrys. Some bulbs went in (lower left) and my Gooseberry is growing well this year (lower right)
I was asked to carry out a repair to this gate hook. It had worn down fairly substantially in the past decades. Having taken advice from a professional I chose to weld a new bit of steel to the existing pin there by restoring it to closer to what it used to be. I picked up some three quarter inch diameter round bar stock (mild steel). Having and cut a length of it equivalent to the length of the existing pin and I then away from this bit of bar so that they two fitted together to form a round pin. Then it was just a case of welding it into one lump. As it was, This picture was in this blog entry: https://bhhh.co.uk/circles/ Here you can see the very clean (wire brushed using the angle grinder) existing hinge pin and the slightly rust coloured bit of mild steel sitting […]
On my lunchtime ride today,I pedaled through Chilfrome on my way.Up the hill I rode with glee,To avoid the valley where it might be wet, you see. The temperature today was fine,Around thirteen degrees, so divine. The wind from the west blew strong,But the hedge blocked it, so I didn’t mind it long. From the entrance to a farm up high,I saw a view that caught my eye.Cattistock, in all its glory,Made me stop and marvel at the story. So glad I took this road today,On my lunchtime ride, what a lovely way,To clear my head and stretch my legs,And enjoy the beauty that nature begs. I asked ChatGPT to re-write my paragraph into that poem… I’m not that good..
I had some fun today at lunch time, delivered some books to a fella outside of the village, normally I’d take my bike, but it looked like rain, so I took the Land Rover and did my trick of videoing it. Also found a spot to try to test the prop travel.
I have been asked to repair an old gate hinge at the Church, were the pin is worn out I shall be replacing it with a bush that will be drilled and tapped and bolted to existing hinge mount. I was also asked to reduce this bird box hole down to attract smaller birds only.
We had some snow during Wednesday 18th, this is what it looked like: By the time the minor snow fall was over it was looking like this: I went to collect my daughter in the Land Rover and wound up driving other people to more inaccessible places also, which was great fun. This morning the snow has not melted.
I decided to do a long ride on Friday lunch thing. This was it.. It wwas cold, frost was still on the northern slopes of the hills or in the shadow of the hedges.
I went for a bike ride on Tuesday to see what the flooding looked like. The top left photo: I chose not to ride through this was it’s probably about 0.3 meters deep. I rode around via Maiden Newton to see the extent of the flooding down stream. Unknown to me the water levels were still rising, so when I returned to the far side of this flood it was probably a few centimetres deeper. Either way I wanted to get home so rode through it. I got very wet feet.
We lit the stove for the first time last night. I was pleased with how easy it was to light. I thought it made the room pretty warm. This morning we both felt the house was still warm, the chimney breast on the stairs side upstairs was still definitely warm this morning, which I had not noticed last night, so I imagine that heat has been trickling out into the house all night long.
