Well, I thought I was going to make make a swing set from that 1″ round bar I found but when I was able to bend the bar by hand I realised something. So when I dragged the two lengths of this stuff out, I found that they were 6m lengths, and so would make better legs, so since I was holding the V shaped bit, I thought I’d just see if I could open up the acute angle to be a right angle, without using heat. To my surprise I was able just bend it, but as it bent I could feel the metal cracking and breaking, so I kept bending until it broke. I then inspected the break and found that it wasn’t steel at all, or at least wasn’t a grade of steel that I wanted to work with. I actually just asked some friends what they […]
When we bought this house there was a fire extinguisher on the wall. I had never really looked at it, I just put our fire blanket above it and left it. I took a look at it today for some reason. It’s probably not fit for purpose, and since I’d hate to actually use one of these indoors, particularly in my own home, so I shall get rid of it. I’ll likely let it off then see if I can use the canister as a compressed air cylinder on the land rover. The locking diff doesn’t not require very many liters of air to operate so this would be way more efficient. Thought I’ll likely leave the other tank in there but perhaps valve it.
Tonight I stacked the reminder of the wood that was delivered last week. I had my trolley jack and jacked up the roof, then chocked the pallet I was jacking up and left it like that, I think the roof sheets will now shed the water rather then funneling it into the garage. It’s just a temporary permanent fix until we get around to wanting to put a new roof on it. This year isn’t looking promising and neither is next year.
A very rotten tree had fallen on the outskirts of the village, so a neighbour and I went down, cut it up and bought it home. It’s very well seasoned, possibly too well, it’s very light and will burn very fast, but it’ll still give of heat and my neighbour said he’d burned worse, so that was good enough for me.
We went and stayed at a camp site (Daggles Camp site) just 6.5 miles from home at the weekend. We had the entire site to ourselves which was lovely. We did get rained on in the morning of the second day, but managed to get packed up without getting wet. We borrow the tent, which was far better than our 2 man tent. Due to the dry conditions there were cracks in the ground which interested me, I would have liked to have found out how deep they went. Though I doubt the owner would have been as interested in having huge holes dug in their camp site. I was able to get my arm pretty far down then it got too narrow to hold a torch. These cracks ran for tens of meters and seemed to occur more around the edges of the field than in the middle.
I discovered three 5m lengths of 25mm diameter rusty steel bars tucked in the rafters of the garage. I called Alan to discuss what they might be, he proposed wall tie rods, i feel that’s pretty probably and am willing to run with that. I wondered what to do with them and hit on an idea, i shall make a swing frame from them. I put a nice bend in one tonight. Stuck tthe blow torch on it for a bit and just bent it nicely right in the middle. Now i need to drag the others out and do the same to another. Then weld a cross beam in, perhaps bolt? I don’t know, need to think about it’s construction. If it’s fully welded it’ll be jolly heavy and also not collapsible.
During that very hot spell we had, my fern died off. It has made quite a come back since then. 17th August it was pushing up some new shoots or fronds: 19th and 20th respectively: 21st and then jump to today the 25th August:
I got the Volvo out and made some ramps to get it up so that I might see if taking the exhaust off was a good plan or not. The hole in the exhaust is worse since I picked at it. I also had a good dig round the wheel arch, sill and floor plan joint, now there is a massive hole: The car has gone in for a quote to repair…. could be the end for the Volvo.
I fitted the window from the other green house to ours, so that it would auto-open based on the internal temperature. I had to get a piece of the ridge extrusion as that is the other half of the hinge. I shall now refit the old window in another place as a manual alternative. I also managed to cut the pane of glass or the back center bit that matches to the two roof angles in the middle. I traced out on some card the green house roof angle, then just by eye scored the glass and it broke perfectly.
Dad gave me a couple more agaves earlier in the year, last night I re-potted them into larger pots as one had started to look a little sad. I’d been meaning to do it for ages, so this was not too soon. I also planted out the three sallows, the tomato and also put the spider plant into a pot and brought it inside. The larger one has grown quite a lot I think. Here is my previous post about it: https://bhhh.co.uk/agave/
