I dragged the tree trunk off the fence today and got it into the hollow was I had discussed with owner of the field. I also dragged out another tree trunk that was really rotten and been brought down by the ash at the same time. Both will be left as an offering to mother nature and the insects. I also got a little video, but then my phone battery went flat, so just took some photo’s before I left.
I did grind my axe, literally not figuratively, using the angle grinder and probably heated it too much and managed to change the molecular structure of the steel such that it softened. So yesterday I had my blowtorch on MAP gas and heated it and beat it back into shape, then quenched it in oil. I do not think that my blowtorch is really hot enough to achieve proper hardening and I was also worried that the head of the axe was getting too hot close to the plastic handle so I quenched sooner at a lower temperature than I would have liked to have.
I now own my favourite kind of horse, a saw horse that I made from two pallets. Today I used it, got another load cut down.
I have now installed two seatbelts into the back seat of the Land Rover, I will not go into the legal side of things regarding this installation, show to say that it’s slightly nuts. It’s done, and they shall be used by those who sit in the back. I placed a some large 10 mm thick plates under the wheel arch to spead any load, I have also rigged it such that while not in use the belts can be strapped up out of the way and will not rattle around.
This was the last of the stuff that we were able to cut using a 20inch bar chain saw. Next is the main trunk which is going to require some serious sized saw. I also made this short video:
I decided to replace the candle power head lamps with something that I hope will be brighter. I hhave thus far just daisy chained the indicator and side light onto the existing circuits. In the future I plan to add circuits back to the Arduino and some code so that those lamps are individually controllable.
Mike and I spent lunchtime cutting, loading and organising the brash. So that was two more loads done. Still got a few to go yet.
I got a chainsaw sharpening kit yesterday and sharpened the chain. It’s easy to do, once I’d been shown how by a kind neighbour.
I offered to help a neighbour cut up a fallen tree. I imagined he’d want the wood for himself and that it would simply be great fun. But it turned out that he didn’t want it and just wanted the tree removed. He offered me a chainsaw in exchange for removing it. I accepted his kind offer and have enlisted the help of some other neighbours who want the wood also. We had a great day cutting it up on Friday. I think at least one is then was up there over the weekend, I’ll have to spend some more time up there this week as there is more to go yet.
