I did grind my axe, literally not figuratively, using the angle grinder and probably heated it too much and managed to change the molecular structure of the steel such that it softened. So yesterday I had my blowtorch on MAP gas and heated it and beat it back into shape, then quenched it in oil. I do not think that my blowtorch is really hot enough to achieve proper hardening and I was also worried that the head of the axe was getting too hot close to the plastic handle so I quenched sooner at a lower temperature than I would have liked to have.
