Eddie (Friend and colleague in Canada) told me about ChatGPT yesterday. What is ChatGPT I hear you ask: https://openai.com/about/ I have been asking it stuff and just seeing what it can do so far, I thought I’d ask it to act as a writer and re-write my blog entry from yesterday in the style of an early 1900’s news article: In the bustling metropolis of Cattistock, a peculiar sight was witnessed as a gentleman attempted to salvage a damaged technological device. The artefact in question, a Samsung Galaxy Note8, was reported to have experienced issues with its visual display, rendering it partially inoperable. However, the ingenious mind of the aforementioned individual discovered a novel use for the ailing device. By mounting the phone in a fixed position, it could be utilized as a rudimentary dash cam to capture footage of one’s journey. Using aluminium to construct a makeshift frame, the […]
Okay, that title is little rich. I have some old phones which have only partly given up. This particular one (a Samsung Galaxy Note8) has an issue with the screen where it fails to light up the screen, so that it will accept input via touch, but you can’t see what you’re doing or it does light up but the bottom bit flickers really badly, as per the pictures. The camera and apps all work perfectly otherwise. So it occurred to me that I could mount the phone such that all I had to do was it turn it on and leave it recording and I’d have a dash cam! I folded up a bit aluminium (notice that I haven’t even taking the plastic backing off), used a hammer to beat the edge around the phone, risking smashing the phone even more. I realised as I was doing this that […]
I thought I would just have a test of my welding skills, to see if I think I am of a reasonable skill level to take on the repair to the church gate. I have been asked to repair a gate hanger at the church. I have taken advice from a building conservation specialist who suggested it was best to make the repair as permanent as possible and also in keeping with the original design. So I shall be welding in some new metal to beef up the worn out pin. This is rather than drilling and tapping out the pin and using a bolted connection. The result of the welded option should be better in his opinion. Of cause if the weld doesn’t take well then I can always revert to drilling and tapping. These two welds were at very different amps, the lower left one was at about […]
Having fitted a new front prop-shaft I felt it best to go around with the grease gun and put new grease into all of the other places that have grease nipples, such as the steering joints and rear prop.
At lunchtime today I set about trying to see what affect articulation has on the propshaft length.
I have been asked to repair an old gate hinge at the Church, were the pin is worn out I shall be replacing it with a bush that will be drilled and tapped and bolted to existing hinge mount. I was also asked to reduce this bird box hole down to attract smaller birds only.
We were driving back along the B3157 on Sunday, the view a lovely from Abbotsbury hill, we’ve not yet taken the time to go and explore over there yet. So these photos were only taken from in the car.
Dad gave me a 2kW electric corded chainsaw that he’s purchased for a job that he never did and has since moved house so likely will have no use for this thing. I assembled it last night, filled it with oil and took a small cut in some polystyrene, then stuck it on a shelf, handy for next time I have to hack some wood up close to a power socket.
We had a great little USB charger that I picked up in the airport one time and put on expenses. It packed up a couple of years ago and I had planned on pillaging the USB ports from it for some other use. But getting into it proved too hard and I wound up using a 2lb ball pane hammer to bust it open and found that it had suffered a heat failure: It was also totally impossible to recover the USB ports as they’re too well incorporated into the board, so I binned the lot. Shame.
I had to get two new tyres for the Citroen while we were over Portsmouth way, so managed to find a garage just on Hayling Island that would do it on a Saturday afternoon at short notice. So while they were doing it, I took a walk. This signal is almost all that is left from the days when there was a rail link to the island.
