So Hannah and I have various UK electrical items, which we have been running one at a time on a UK to Canadian 2 pin plug adapter, then when we returned to Canada we brought with us a UK 4 gang extension lead.
Last night we went out and bought a very cheap 2 pin Canadian plug.
I then did some research to discover which pin is live/hot and which is neutral, I read in two rather dodgy sources that the larger of the two pins is neutral and the smaller is live or hot.
Not having any real tools here I used my Leatherman knife to undo the screws on the extension lead plug and take the wires out of the plug. I then realised that I needed to start with a clean cable so simply sliced the end of the cable right off with the knife, I then wired the brown wire to the smaller of the two pins, which is also the brass screw and the blue wire, the neutral to the larger pin and the silver screw, steel or nickel plated maybe? Cool that they have different color screws for the live and neutral eh?!
As you can see I remembered to wrap the bared wire clockwise around the screws so that as they do up the pull the wire in rather than spitting it out.
And job done, all good, I plugged it in and my wife’s laptop didn’t explode, which was good. This was the work area, clean and safe etc.. I did all the electrical work while everything was unplugged from the wall as we only have fuses in our flat, but then again the electricity supply is only 120v here but it is at 60Hz and I think they are 15amp uses in the board. But we do have a wooden floor which might insulate one from a shock..
In other news; Hannah and I are going Wild at Heart tomorrow to help out again, they are having a yard sale which Hannah is going to help with. I am going to be helping to put the shingles on the roofs of the new cages and also possibly building the internal walls etc. I believe that the weather is at least going to be dry this weekend, we had something like 50mm of rain in the past two days.
