This may, or may not, be the start of a fair size project. I have dragged the V8 engine and gear box that was pulled from my white V8 110 Country station wagon some 15 or so years ago. Since then it has been languishing in a hedge getting grown in with brambles, Having dragged it out using Dave’s winch, we split the engine, gearbox and transfer case, removed the exhaust manifold and bits. Then the next day Alan and I stripped the remainder of the engine down. Loaded it all into the car and brought it home. Next is the job of cleaning it all down, and seeing what’s okay and what’s not. I shall then make a decision on whether or not to carry on and rebuild this engine, or whether to not bother and do something different. Got some thinking and cleaning to do.
Fitted the rev counter to the land rover again. Forgot it had so many wires, turns out it’s a TIM branded 4, 6 and 8 cylinder capable job. I found this wiring diagram online.
Well, I thought I was going to make make a swing set from that 1″ round bar I found but when I was able to bend the bar by hand I realised something. So when I dragged the two lengths of this stuff out, I found that they were 6m lengths, and so would make better legs, so since I was holding the V shaped bit, I thought I’d just see if I could open up the acute angle to be a right angle, without using heat. To my surprise I was able just bend it, but as it bent I could feel the metal cracking and breaking, so I kept bending until it broke. I then inspected the break and found that it wasn’t steel at all, or at least wasn’t a grade of steel that I wanted to work with. I actually just asked some friends what they […]
When we bought this house there was a fire extinguisher on the wall. I had never really looked at it, I just put our fire blanket above it and left it. I took a look at it today for some reason. It’s probably not fit for purpose, and since I’d hate to actually use one of these indoors, particularly in my own home, so I shall get rid of it. I’ll likely let it off then see if I can use the canister as a compressed air cylinder on the land rover. The locking diff doesn’t not require very many liters of air to operate so this would be way more efficient. Thought I’ll likely leave the other tank in there but perhaps valve it.
Tonight I stacked the reminder of the wood that was delivered last week. I had my trolley jack and jacked up the roof, then chocked the pallet I was jacking up and left it like that, I think the roof sheets will now shed the water rather then funneling it into the garage. It’s just a temporary permanent fix until we get around to wanting to put a new roof on it. This year isn’t looking promising and neither is next year.
A very rotten tree had fallen on the outskirts of the village, so a neighbour and I went down, cut it up and bought it home. It’s very well seasoned, possibly too well, it’s very light and will burn very fast, but it’ll still give of heat and my neighbour said he’d burned worse, so that was good enough for me.
We went and stayed at a camp site (Daggles Camp site) just 6.5 miles from home at the weekend. We had the entire site to ourselves which was lovely. We did get rained on in the morning of the second day, but managed to get packed up without getting wet. We borrow the tent, which was far better than our 2 man tent. Due to the dry conditions there were cracks in the ground which interested me, I would have liked to have found out how deep they went. Though I doubt the owner would have been as interested in having huge holes dug in their camp site. I was able to get my arm pretty far down then it got too narrow to hold a torch. These cracks ran for tens of meters and seemed to occur more around the edges of the field than in the middle.
