Manitoulin trip

I just found the pictures of us watching the super bowl, we bought some popcorn which had cashews in it, that was lovely, we also had melon, so there’s a few pictures of that.

Today we went with Santi and Tibor (And his dog) down to Manitoulin Island. We went in Santi’s car, and Tibor went in his with his dog, apparently sometimes Tibors dog is not so friendly, though we have seen no evidence of this. We went to Bridal Veil Falls first, they weren’t completely frozen, there was still a little water coming over them. I climbed in behind the falls on the ice, the ice formations in there were pretty cool, as was the frozen falls them selves. We then drove on down to Providence bay, we went there with Jessica in the summer. the whole of the bay looked frozen, but I dont know how thick most of it was, we could make out the water on the horizon, but only just. The first 30 or 40m of water was all ice, I guess where it had blown in and stacked up, Thats what we walked on, we didn’t dare to go onto the main part of the ice sheet. I tried to skid on a sheet of ice on the shore and fell over. The snow on the beach was about 2″ thick, but has a hardened surface so that we were able walk ontop of it, only by jumping on it were we able to punch through it into the softer stuff below. In places where the sand was visible the frost had lifted the grans of sand about an inch above the main beach.

Here’s the video of the falls and pictures from the whole day.

Couple of weeks of nothing

We chilled for a weekend after Rebecca left, just felt like not doing much! This is no reflection on how hard Rebecca was to entertain or anything. No seriously, its not. Really. Seriously? YES! Well I am pleased we got past that one.

So on to this weekend just gone, we were offered the chance through Golder to go to a bonspiel on Friday night, it was suggested that Santi, Tibor, Hannah and I should go, as none of us had ever done curling before. Then it was discovered that there were no places left, but at about 10am Friday morning a team dropped out, and we got in! Jake went as our captain, he had curled before.

Then on Saturday we went and got our skates sharpened, they were so blunt! I had no idea it would make so much difference. Skates are an interesting shape. Yes they ARE.

The bottom of a modern ice skate blade, unlike the blade of a knife, has a crescent-shaped hollow, creating two sharp edges on each skate. Ideally, the two edges of a blade are parallel, but poor maintenance practices, such as improper sharpening or lack of consistent sharpening, can often result in oblique edges. These “bad” edges can affect skating ability significantly. The depth of this hollow is known as the Radius of Hollow (RoH). The Radius of Hollow is typically between 1/4″ and 1″ depending on the type of skates and the user

It made a difference to how Hannah was able to skate, but I am so bad that it didn’t affect my ability at all! However I also didn’t fall over either on our one lap! I felt that was quite an achievement!

We spent Saturday evening with Katie and Troy, I helped clear the drive again with the ATV. Then on Sunday we went to the Cinema with Santi then later on we watched the Super Bowl, Madona did the half time thingy.

This week Hannah discovered that there is a Sudburylicious food festival on at the moment, a three course meal for $25, so we decided to go to Mr. Prime Rib, which is a restaurant that we have both heard good review of. But it doesn’t look like much from outside (Google Street View), but it was very good, Very VERY good. We treated it as our Valentines meal.

Rebecca’s last weekend

We went to Onaping falls on Saturday morning, then we returned to Sudbury and went skating at Queens skating rink, where I fell over three times in two laps.. I am getting better honest! We later met up with Troy and Katie and went bowling and played some pool. Then on Sunday we went to Science North for most of the day, when it closed at 4 we went and did a quick skate on the lake, it was very bumpy.. Here are the weekends pictures.

Also this is a video of Quillan climbing down to get fed.

Snow ploughing is awesome!

Tonight we went with Drew (One of my work colleagues) to his place out in the Valley on Old Highway 69. First Drew ploughed the front drive a bit, then we went and he let me plough the back yard.

It was awesome fun! I want a plough for the Versa now!! Then we moved some of the car around and finished ploughing the front part. That garage is fully heated, so went in there and took a look at the snow machines, Drew made a track round the back and on to the snow machine trail which is that track to the right of the garages, then I took his snow machine maybe half a mile down the trail and back, since I was dressed for work I was a little cold at 30mph so didn’t go any further. Then we went and got a pizza and dropped by Drew’s dad’s car lot and then home.

Hannah asked if I’d shave today, so I did. Growing a beard was amusing but I’m not particularly attached to it (anymore!! lol) Na I really wasn’t). So we took before and after pictures to so how many years I drop!!

Niagara with Rebecca

We decided to go to Niagara with Rebecca. We checked the weather report again and again prior to our drive south. In the end we had great weather, it was blue sky’s and sun all the way there and back, short of the last hour and a half to Sudbury. It was light, no where near as bad as when Hannah and I drove down three years back. In hind sight we drover in particularly poor conditions that time! I didn’t bat an eye lid at the time, maybe I am getting…..
We had a great time, saw the falls and went into one of the casino’s. We also met up with one of Rebecca’s friends from Uni. Her dad took us out for dinner at a nice Italian restaurant in Niagara. The day after we went on the journey behind the falls then went to where the whirl pool is, but there was no whirl pool. whether that was due to the flow rate of the river or not I don’t know, but it wasn’t there.

Busy Saturday lazy Sunday

Hannah and I were out almost all of Saturday doing things, mainly though we went for Coffee with a lady Hannah used to teach IT too, we went to Tim’s in the morning. We went our separate ways around lunch time, Hannah went and played Porketta Bingo, where she had a great time and won some porketta!! It is played by purchasing three playing cars, i.e. a king of spades, a seven of clubs and a 2 of hearts. they are stuck to a piece of card, then the caller calls out the cards, once they have called all of your cards you shout out ‘Porketta’. You win 1lb of portketta which is very well cooked and seasoned pork. Mean while I had gone off to meet Brian to go and take aerial photos of the wild life centre. He has a microlight plane which he built. We flew out over lively, then he suggested that we fly 70 miles (Nautical miles obviously) north to where his brother in law and a friend were ice fishing, so we went and landed on a frozen lake, helped them build a fire, they were going to camp out over night while fishing in -17 and a gale for the fun of it, we took off again and headed for home. Then on Sunday we didn’t do much!

New SSD in my Eeepc

I installed my Christmas present Solid State Drive into my Eeepc. Thought I’d bore you all with the details! So we went to Home Depot and picked up a small screw driver, then I got myself a beer (Molson Canadian) and watched a video on YouTube, then I knuckled down and found the tutorial which would show me how to get the keyboard and touch pad off the Eeepc. Having watched it I proceeded to dismantle the laptop and drink my beer. I then installed my new SSD, and then installed Puppeee linux on it.

NOTE FROM HANNAH: Thank you very much for all our Christmas gifts – we were truly spoilt. Whilst Brendan was busy with his PC I was admiring all my wonderful gifts :D

Brendan: I then went onto find a script online which automatically alters the color balance of the image, the resizes the image and lastly saves it under a new name in the same folder from whence the original came.

The snow is cool

Christmas Eve I took a video of the snow blowing around, it had gone really fine and dry.. Youtube

We are enjoying the snow! Its great, its been warm and cold over the last couple of days. We have mainly been chilling and relaxing, playing games and reading books etc. We saw the new Tintin film on Tuesday night, it was very good, we enjoyed it anyway. We have been walked a bit in the snow, went to Lake Ramsey, which is pretty frozen now, I walked out until about 2m into the lake.. It felt solid.. We took lots of pictures.

Considering how much we missed you all we still managed to have a lovely Christmas.
