Last weekend Hannah did some cooking, which is great because it was cake and stuff!! I was very very pleased with her decision. I felt that it would enhance my already great life a lot!! And it did!
Taking a single step back, we didn’t get up to very much on Saturday, except shopping, we got many items, mainly though we got snow boots, they’re good to forty below, they have a felt lining in them. It is meant to snow any day now (it snowed today, butand when it does Hannah and I are going to get a Dairy Queen at that moment if we can!

Well I’ve eaten a few of the cup cakes and a number of mince pies so far, they’re exceedingly good! Thanks Hannah!

We went to Costco on Monday evening with Troy and Katie, we got various things cheap in bulk. Troy and I looked at flat panel TV’s, for about $1500 one can get a 60″ LED type TV.. awesome. I want one.

We’re still waiting for the snow… roll on the snow!!

Not done much

Hi all, Hannah and I have not been up to very much of recent. So starting off back when we were in Mississauga, we went to the Buddhist temple on Thursday lunch time, the temple its self was very beautiful, inside mainly the outside wasn’t too different to any other building.,-79.74332&hl=en&num=1&t=h&vpsrc=0&z=17

That is the building, inside though it was amazing, we only went into the Tea House though, for lunch. We went with Yves Blias, who is a new senior electrical engineer who will be working out of the Calgary office. He traveled back there today. He was just down in Mississauga so that he could meet us lot.

That is the website for the temple’s Tea House.

The rest of our week was quite uneventful, we drove back later on that day and got back into Sudbury at about 9pm. Friday Hannah started her job..

The weekend we chilled, I went to wild life place, but I’d missed Brian and Ivan, so I helped in the center, i changed the water in a turtles tank, siphoned it out, cleaned it and filled it up again. Then headed back home again.

I have acquired a desktop pc, an old one, only a Pentium 4, Dell. So its a 2.8GHz with a 1GB of ram and I think it has a 10MHz front side bus, which isn’t that great. I think that this spec of Dell came out in late 2003, it does however have an LCD/TFT screen. I cleaned the keyboard out last weekend, what spurred me on this was the fact that I ran Puppy Linux on it, which allowed me into the hard drive, where I was able to see all of the profiles of all of the many people who had used it. A short time later I notice how much dirt was in the keyboard.. So I removed all of the keys, took the top part of it off, the part between the keys and base, and washed it in hot soapy water, then cleaned each and every single key in turn and replaced them in pretty much the same place that they came from, I haven’t yet noticed anything wrong with it.

Anyways, I have formatted the hard drive now, 2 3rds of it are not an NTFS partition and the rest is going to be a Linux partition, well it has been already twice in fact. First off I installed Kubuntu, which is a derivation of Ubuntu, this was less than satisfactory, so I ditched that and installed Open Suse, which was much better, but still didn’t inspire me. I’ll continue this story in a moment.

Neven (A guy who stayed with Hannah and I in the Golder house) who is a mechanical draftsman with PasteTec who I have worked closely with since then was up from Mississauga staying in the Golder house again, also here is Santie, who is from Golder’s Madrid office, is also staying in the Golder house. So on Wednesday night we all went out for dinner to Pat & Mario’s, then after the meal since Hannah and I drove us all, we dropped them back to 92 Hyland Drive, where Neven invited us in for a slice of the cake that his wife had made, it was really good, however when I asked Neven what it was, he had no idea!! Anyways, Neven is also a bit of a computer person, he has installed Fedora on his laptop, which I had previously downloaded, so I again formatted the hard drive and installed it, but I did it wrong, so I am doing it again as I write this.

It was -4 last night, but it is going warm up to a high of 9 on Sunday. We are just looking forward to the big freeze!! All the best, Us.

Trip to Mississauga

First off we went to Coniston were we visited a church bazaar and got Brendan got to meet one of Hannah’s IT students, we had a lovely lunch and got some cup cakes, then we headed for Toronto. About half way we stopped for a coffee at a gas station. We got our coffee and hot chocolate at Country Style, but it’s part of a small strip mall of sorts, so Hannah went and took a look around the shops, there was some fun stuff there, but we didn’t get much. We did get a couple of kinder eggs though, they’re really cool these days:

Anyway, we arrived safe and sound at 7.30 having taken a wrong turn before the 401, but we didn’t need to break the maps out of the glove box, we’re almost locals here now, I am sure the receptionist at the hotel recognized us!! (Please excuse the miss spelled words, they call it ‘English’ but I’m not convinced)

Wild at heart and a walk at Ramsey

Last weekend Hannah and I spent both days at Wild at Heart. Hannah was originally there to help out with the yard sale but instead spent her time outside making the enclosures winter ready by nailing planks of wood to the outside of the cages. She also managed to pick up a few items very cheap; we got me a pair of ice skates for a mere $5. We also got a dressing table mirror and a lamp. I helped Brian and Ivan with the cages. Brian and I roofed two of the cages in two days, we put 1/2″ think sterling board flooring in 8′ x 4′ sheets on, then put the shingles onto that. Getting the shingles on straight and aligned is challenge. We also got some of the mesh up inside of one of the cage’s ceiling, using a compressed air stapler, which was capable of firing the staple so hard that it would slice the wire in half and not fix the mesh at all.

The weather has been cooling down this week, its been below zero over night. But its been dry and sunny most days. We are looking forward to the snow and ice, I want to try out my skates!

Last night we went for a walk down by Science North. There was a lovely lilac sky which made for some pretty pictures.

How to wire a UK extension lead to a Canadian plug

So Hannah and I have various UK electrical items, which we have been running one at a time on a UK to Canadian 2 pin plug adapter, then when we returned to Canada we brought with us a UK 4 gang extension lead.

Last night we went out and bought a very cheap 2 pin Canadian plug.

I then did some research to discover which pin is live/hot and which is neutral, I read in two rather dodgy sources that the larger of the two pins is neutral and the smaller is live or hot.
Not having any real tools here I used my Leatherman knife to undo the screws on the extension lead plug and take the wires out of the plug. I then realised that I needed to start with a clean cable so simply sliced the end of the cable right off with the knife, I then wired the brown wire to the smaller of the two pins, which is also the brass screw and the blue wire, the neutral to the larger pin and the silver screw, steel or nickel plated maybe? Cool that they have different color screws for the live and neutral eh?!

As you can see I remembered to wrap the bared wire clockwise around the screws so that as they do up the pull the wire in rather than spitting it out.

And job done, all good, I plugged it in and my wife’s laptop didn’t explode, which was good. This was the work area, clean and safe etc.. I did all the electrical work while everything was unplugged from the wall as we only have fuses in our flat, but then again the electricity supply is only 120v here but it is at 60Hz and I think they are 15amp uses in the board. But we do have a wooden floor which might insulate one from a shock..

In other news; Hannah and I are going Wild at Heart tomorrow to help out again, they are having a yard sale which Hannah is going to help with. I am going to be helping to put the shingles on the roofs of the new cages and also possibly building the internal walls etc. I believe that the weather is at least going to be dry this weekend, we had something like 50mm of rain in the past two days.

First weekend back married

Well, I’ve been back at work for the best part of a week, Hannah has been getting us back in order this past week. We’ve not been very active this week just gone.
Taking a step back, we have see these in Pearson Airport before, but we got pictures this time:

The weather is warmer and wetter than expected, but thats ok, my wife says that she likes the weather colder.. So this weekend we have been and seen what is left of the Fall colors (Autumn colours). We went to Onanping Falls, which is about 40min drive north. Apparently they were lovely a week ago, I think we missed the best of it.

Hannah is back in the UK

Well, here I am, on my own in Canada.. Poor me, missing Hannah.. I wonder what she’s up to?! I have a couple of things planned to keep me from missing her too too much. I am going to watch the Rugby tomorrow with Kobus at 92 Hyland Drive. In the morning I might go to a city auction, Eddie said he might come too. On Sunday Troy, Patrick, one of Pat’s friends and I are going to Burwash Prison, not because we’ve done something wrong, but becsause its disused since the 70’s I think. Might try to write my speech now.

We saw a black bear!

Yes you read it right, we did, honestly. We did! Here are some pictures that we took after we’d gone past at about 90km/h, stopped, turned around at the next safe opertunity, pulled up on the side of the road, gone into the trunk (boot) and retirved my camera, then gotten back into the car.. in this time I think the bear had decided that it wasn’t going to hang about for the tourists to watch one going about one’s business, it was able to cover about 50 or so meters away from us in a very short time, far faster than I could have run.. Impressive to say the least.

We weren’t the only ones to stop, a truck went by and came back to take pictures also..

Saturday morning at Wild at Heart

Hannah and I spent the morning (9 till 12) at the wildlilfe place, Hannah fed a couple of small birds, a reven and also the racoons. I poured concrete, we managed to pour the three cage bases that we did last time I was there, also, because the concrete went so far, we made another base and poured that too! I am knackered now, harder than the gym any day! I am now sat in the laundret across the road waiting for our washing to be done. Hannah is doing some washing at our laundry room in the appartment building.

Finally got ‘my’ laptop back!

Brendan lost his ‘works’ laptop, mainly because its the spare one and someone else needed it more then he did to post on here!! They have returned it to him, so he has finally downloaded pictures from his camera. They date back to when Jessicsa was here all those weeks ago! They are:

The last few are from when we went for a walk around the area.
